The Deathly Hallows

(started July 29th, finished August 21st)

I was kind of in a daze up until I started writing this. The end of the last book made me completely forget about the fact that I’ll be starting the last Harry Potter book I’ll ever read. What a ride. But I’m not sad yet. I’m saving that for after I finish this journey.

Chapter 1: The Dark Lord Ascending.

– Lord Voldemort plans to attack Harry as soon as the ancient magic protecting him is lifted. Things are moving a lot faster than I expected.
– Here he’s very clearly showing his disgust for Muggles and non-pure blooded wizards.

Chapter 2: In Memoriam.

– No surprise that people are saying horrible things about Dumbledore now that he’s gone. Doesn’t make it any less vile. Boy do I hope that Skeeter gets her comeuppance.
– What was that flash of blue?!

Chapter 3: The Dursleys Departing.

– Dudley of all people. I won’t lie, I was definitely touched.

Chapter 4: The Seven Potters.

– Everything is moving SO FAST. Voldemort showed up like he said he would.
– Hagrid can’t be down for the count. I absolutely refuse for that to be the case.

Chapter 5: The Fallen Warrior.

– Mad-Eye was the fallen warrior 😦
– Dark magic really is the most abhorrent thing. It astounds me how quick the killing curse works and how scarily anticlimactic it is. One flick of the wand and you fall dead. Poor Hedwig.
– So Harry’s wand acted of his own accord when it shot out golden flames. That sounds a lot like the spell Dumbledore used to repel the inferi. I got really sad when Harry realized that Dumbledore would believe him if he told him, but Dumbledore is gone 😦

Chapter 6: The Ghoul in Pyjamas.

– I guess Ron and Hermione really do know what they’re up against by going along with Harry to finish Voldemort. I was a little sad that Hermione put enchantments on her parents to make them forget her in the event that she doesn’t return… And the fact that they’re the only ones who know about the Horcruxes, and that the rest of Ron’s family understand that is also sad.
– I’m only starting to realize what an insurmountable challenge it is to deal with, what, 4 possible Horcruxes? The ring, notebook and locket (maybe) have all been dealt with leaving three left and then Voldemort himself. Where does Harry even begin? And how on earth will he defeat Voldemort himself?

Chapter 7: The Will of Albus Dumbledore.

– Rufus Scrimgeour is unpleasant. Of course Harry’s biggest problem right now isn’t the Dark Lord but the Ministry of Magic.
– So here’s the thing, Dumbledore left Ron, Hermione and Harry these things and I’m assuming they will help with the search of the Horcruxes. But how could Dumbledore have known he would die now?

Chapter 8: The Wedding.

– Aunt Muriel is probably the third character in this series who is just absolutely infuriating. The other two being Harry’s aunt and Dolores Umbridge.
– Scrimgeour is dead?! That can’t mean that Voldemort’s taken over the Ministry then?

Chapter 9: A Place to Hide.

– Things are really dire now, and the situation seems to be getting even more worse. They really need to find these Horcruxes fast, but with things so perilous will they be able to do that?
– Of course Voldemort is angry, Harry’s managed to evade him again. Serves him right. I hope he’s trembling in his boots.

Chapter 10: Kreacher’s Tale.

– Why doesn’t Harry really to the portrait of Dumbledore directly if he’s so curious about these things? Please tell me it happens at some point at least.
– R.A.B was Regulus!
– Aw Kreacher 😦 did I fall in the same trap that wizards do by disregarding the feelings of a house elf? I’m sorry Kreacher.

Chapter 11: The Bribe.

– Dolores Umbridge took the locket off of Mundungus Fletcher. Knowing her she surely supports Voldemort’s control over the Ministry and probably handed the locket straight to him. That’s assuming she knows what it really is though.

Chapter 12: Magic is Might.

– I’m so nervous.

Chapter 13: The Muggle-Born Registration Commission.

– WHAT HAPPENED?

Chapter 14: The Thief.

– The mystery just keeps getting deeper and deeper!

Chapter 15: The Goblin’s Revenge.

– They’re falling apart 😦

Chapter 16: Godric’s Hollow.

– Aw man, that scene with Harry at his parent’s graves was heartbreaking.

Chapter 17: Bathilda’s Secret.

– Oh no no no no no, Harry doesn’t have a wand.

Chapter 18: The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore.

– We finally learn about the second-most dangerous Dark Wizard, Grindelwald.

Chapter 19: The Silver Doe.

– Okay this chapter was really great because so many problems were solved! Harry managed to get his hands on a spare wand, Harry found the sword, Ron came back and the Horcrux in the locket is destroyed!
– But who was pulling the strings here? A chapter ago everything seemed utterly hopeless. But through the patronus the team is reunited and now Voldemort is one Horcrux down. A patronus in the shape of a doe…

Chapter 20: Xenophilius Lovegood.

– You know it really is a shame that the fear of Voldemort is so acute that people are afraid of doing anything that might upset him. Even people who want to help Harry are terrified of incurring his anger. So much so that, let’s not forget, the Voldemort-controlled Ministry of Magic is working to effectively exterminate Muggle-Born witches and wizards. Surely the rest of the wizarding world understands the injustice at work here? The reality is that they do, they’re just too afraid to do anything about it. How does one wizard become so powerful?
“Are you referring to the sign of the Deathly Hallows?” okay here we go, the first mention of the book’s title. The Deathly Hallows.

Chapter 21: The Tale of the Three Brothers.

– So that’s what the Deathly Hallows are.
– Oh Luna 😦 I hope she’s safe. I don’t blame Xenophilius for doing what he did.
– GOOD MOVE by Hermione!

Chapter 22: The Deathly Hallows.

– The Potterwatch broadcast was such a welcome sight. There are people out there resisting Lord Voldemort!
– Harry messed up.

Chapter 23: Malfoy Manor.

– Oh man Hermione was being tortured for so long.
– Things were looking very very dire for a second there, but I figured it seemed early for Harry to confront Voldemort. Ron and Harry definitely made the right decision acting the way they did, if Voldemort had arrived there would be no way any of them could have made it out alive.
– DOBBY NO!

Chapter 24: The Wandmaker.

– This was an absolute wonder of a chapter, Harry almost coming to the conclusion of where the Elder Wand was and where another Horcrux was before I did was so good. Him asking to speak with Ollivander and Griphook was mysterious enough but when he followed it up by saying that whoever he spoke to first would determine what he’d be giving up on, the Horcruxes or the Deathly Hallows, it was so so intriguing.
– Wandlore is so interesting, and apparently it’s something that wizards keep very well guarded.
– Harry giving up the Elder Wand because it’s not what Dumbledore wanted him to focus on was a great return to the trusting relationship Harry had with Dumbledore. I was confused at first how he could be so sure about that, but the fact that it was buried with him says a whole lot.
– Voldemort has the Elder Wand now. This is bad.

Chapter 25: Shell Cottage.

– While I don’t believe that Dumbledore has come back, I still wonder who has been helping Harry out in his mission up until now. Dobby (rest in peace) came at the perfect time to save all of them, but who sent him? Who sent the silver doe and who placed the sword of Godric Gryffindor there?
– I don’t like where this deal with Griphook is going. Bill’s warning is worrying me, though it’s an interesting look into how even the most moderate of wizards think in regards to goblins. Bill doesn’t hate goblins but still doesn’t trust them as a whole.

Chapter 26: Gringotts.

– Treachery from Griphook! But I can hardly blame him can I? Harry never intended to keep his promise after all. But now they have the chalice of Hufflepuff! Now the problem is how are they going to destroy it?
– Honestly this chapter was really cool. The burning treasure and the frantic search for the Horcrux while a horde of Gringotts goblins and wizards were on the chase.
– Escape via dragon! What a climactic end to this treasure hunt.

Chapter 27: The Final Hiding Place.

– Voldemort’s scared. He’s angry and scared. Such a GOOD move by Harry. All this time I was really hoping he’d wise up and start blocking Voldemort out of his thoughts. But it worked in his favour! Connected to his thoughts, Harry knows where the final Horcrux lasts. In Hogwarts. And Harry is right to leave right away, once Voldemort realizes that the rest of his Horcruxes have already been destroyed, he’s sure to do everything in his power to protect his last one. It’s now or never.

Chapter 28: The Missing Mirror.

– Aberforth!
– Okay so he was the helping hand, but the silver doe wasn’t him apparently?
– So that’s the real story of Albus, Aberforth, Ariana and Grindelwald. It’s so tragic.

Chapter 29: The Lost Diadem.

– NO!
