rolling with the blogging momentum

I’ve recently started reading (read: falling in love with) the first book in the Kingkiller Chronicle – The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. It’s a great book and I could talk about it for days. Patrick Rothfuss’ blog is host to a myriad of great pieces regarding his day-to-day and his most recent blog post about writing on his blog hit close to home for me.

You would think that someone who’s trade is writing would have no problem taking a break from their day job to freely write out their thoughts on a blog visited probably by thousands of people a day but as it turns out, that’s far from the truth.

I’ve felt the same way about this blog for awhile now, except that I had the silly notion that if the blog started to gain traction I would be more driven to write here consistently. Rothfuss’ blog shows me that there’s something more to blogging than just getting really good at writing. That it’s normal for real-life things to get in the way of your hobbies and not a result of any personal failings.

When I think about what I want my blog to be remembered by, I always gravitate towards the long-form think-pieces I put a whole bunch of effort into. But the frank reality is that unless you possess a monstrous level of discipline, it’s just not practical.

I do still want to write longer pieces here, but I want to break the cycle of doing so every few months or so. I’ll try to get better at that.
