Why I Blog

When I first started blogging it was to talk about video games. I honestly didn’t even care about writing. I didn’t even like saying that I “blogged” because it sounded so mundane. I just thought it would be cool if I had a really popular website. But in that time I started enjoying the actual writing aspect more than anything else. I stopped posting as many updates that were just me talking about video games (for various reasons) and started pushing out more writing pieces as the blog became more of a creative outlet for me.

I finally got to a point where the popularity of this blog didn’t matter as much to me as the act of cultivating a den of my thoughts and stories put into words. And that’s really the reason why I do this. The best part is that it’s open for anyone to challenge, which is why I think it’s so important to be honest with anything you put out there for others to see.

It took me a while to really “get” blogging. I mentioned before that I never used to actually say I had a blog. It would either be my “up-and-coming website” or just “my website”. That was because I thought blogging was the realm of stay-at-home moms who’d review recipes or whatever, and that wasn’t the image I wanted people to have. And while my view on blogs in general has certainly changed over the years, it was the last year or so that really helped open my eyes to the fact that there are just so many great thoughts out there that deserve to be shared. I think we all owe it to ourselves to put them into words, even just for yourself, before they’re gone. You never know – someone out there might just really enjoy what you have to say. A good friend of mine started his own blog (that he should really update a lot more!) where he posts his poetry and the occasional 5 a.m. post that is so intriguing you can feel his enthusiasm flowing through the words. Another good example is Jeff Atwood’s post on overnight success that I find myself reading whenever I need motivation.

So yeah. That’s why I blog (and probably why you should blog too).
